A Mothers Cooperative in the Arts

Rashidah Salam

shidah

I was born and raised in Malaysia and am now residing in Philadelphia. I teach at Drexel University and Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University). I have participated in local and international art exhibits and have won a few major awards in art competitions and residencies.

I dedicated my success in art career to my root, upbringings, culture and tradition and also the influence that surroundings me. My earliest exposure in thinking creatively would be my experiences of being surrounded by the local beautiful handicrafts and learning about the creative process utilized. As inquisitive and curious as I am, I decided to further my interest in the visual arts by going to the art school for my undergraduate degree. I earned my master’s degree in the U.S. and learned more about western art, painting and world art history. I applied the combination of techniques and processes I’ve seen and learned into my own art. I am always amazed with the Renaissance, Rococo, Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles of painting and the highly decorative arts of every culture and tradition.
